Don’t Fear The Camera – Put Your Best Face Forward
The majority of individuals just can’t simply “act natural” when a camera’s lens is focused on them.
Getting the job done!
When the actors and actresses appear normal and not like they are acting, this produces the best on camera performances. Knowing this, you shouldn’t be fooled by these scenes anymore. They rely on the actor’s skills rather than a natural event occurring.
The secret is making it APPEAR natural.
To accomplish this, you have to find a way to get comfortable when the camera’s lens is trained on you. If you feel tense and on edge, it will come across to your viewers and will distract from the effectiveness of your video.
What is a good way to present yourself as comfortable when in fact you are not? These are my top five recommendations to accomplish that comfortable appearance.
The initial step is to be 100% prepared for your camera shoot. By writing down your script and rehearsing it over and over, you will gain confidence and it will look like you were born to say your lines.
Second, overcome your anxiety about the camera. Remember that a camcorder is just a hunk of metal and other materials. It can’t mock you. You are in complete control of your film project. If you make a mistake, you get a chance to redo it, and your errors will never be seen by anyone. It would astound you how many takes are required even for acting pros.
Third, warm up before letting the camera roll. Jump up and down. Breathe deep. Shake out your muscles. Just like an athlete before a race, warming up will get rid of all that tension. It will get the adrenalin flowing and help you exude excitement, not tension.
Fourth, extend your tongue and widely open your mouth. Vocalize so you can open up your throat. Exercise the muscles of your mouth and jaw as well as cheeks and tongue. This loosens up your muscles and allows your mouth to work better, the same as warming up does. In a way, it’s the same thing as greasing a wheel.
Last and most importantly you need to eliminate the critic within you. The majority of us have that little voice in our head saying not to do this or that thing. The voice may say ‘How silly you look!’ or perhaps ‘You are too old and too fat to be on film!’ or even ‘Who do you think you are, people are going to laugh at you!’ and ‘You have no acting skills!’
If you continue to listen to this negative inner critic, it will be hard to do much of anything. Tell your inner critic to hush! Cut you some slack this is going to be fun. You do not need to let these insecurities rule what you do. Most of us are WAY to harsh on ourselves. Other people do not judge us nearly as harshly as we do ourselves. So make that inner voice be more positive. And give you some corporation. Tell yourself you CAN do this. In fact, it will be fun! You have nothing to fear, you are in control. Just don’t stop.
